Tiong Bahru Market - Many great food options other than Lor Mee & Wanton Noodle!

The newly renovated Tiong Bahru Market was installed with 4 big fans like what you can see in those outdoor MRT stations nowadays. So today we've come to visit a few of the food offered here. Starting off with Carrot Cake...
Fried Carrot Cake, commonly known as Chai Tow Kway is a food in Singapore which Singaporeans eat throughout the day at breakfast, lunch, dinner or even supper.  Do not confuse yourself with the Western carrot cake eaten as dessert.

Tiong Bahru Kampong Carrot Cake offers both the black and white version from $2.50 to $5.00. Kampong Carrot Cake is more popular for the black carrot cake, so we decided to get the black version. While we were ordering, we asked for another chopstick but the owner told us if we wanted to get another chopstick, we need to get a bigger portion of carrot cake. So something for you to take note of.

Very rare you will see places serve carrot cake with banana leaf nowadays. Fried with eggs and sprinkled with spring onion, the difference of Kampong Carrot cake compared to any other fried carrot cake stall the radish cake is of bigger pieces.

The style and taste of this black radish cake very much give you the same feeling of eating the same along the road side’s stalls that perhaps can only be found in Malaysia now.
The fried carrot cake was not of the melt in your mouth variety but taste wise was quite ordinary and nothing to shout about.
  • Stall Name: Tiong Bahru Tau Suan (#02-55)

I used to think that to solve this unbearable heat is a scoop of ice-cream. But I’ve come to the conclusion that a bowl of hot Chinese dessert is the key to making yourself feel cooler on a hot day. I found a stall called Tiong Bahru Tau Suan, selling only 3 desserts, namely Tau Suan, Pulut Hitam and Bubur Terigu.

The beans can be tasted separately and not mashed up like any others.

A bowl of Tau Suan previously only costs $1, but now they are sold at $2 per bowl. The portion isn’t very big but I think that’s what desserts should be like. It shouldn’t be too heavy; something small to close the meal. In my opinion, the Tau Suan was very good. Unlike many bowls of Tau Suan, the sweetness of the thick base did not mask the flavor of the mung beans. Steamed just before added to the base, the mung beans are then further cooked with pandan leaves to give this classic golden dessert the additional aroma. I always love how the You Tiao absorbing all the flavor of the dessert. It not only gives additional texture to the dessert but also goes especially well with the beans that simply crumble in the mouth.

This tau suan has a good consistency, neither diluted nor overly starchy. The beans are nicely steamed beforehand and aren’t mushy or overdone.

I haven’t got a chance to try the Bubur Terigu and Pulut Hitam as they were sold out, but I think that the quality of it can’t be too far off from the other two desserts. Do give it a try if you’re at Tiong Bahru Market in the morning. It can never be too early to have desserts!
Do note these desserts are only available for sale in the morning (till they sell out) so do come early if you want to give it a try.

Three Little Pigs Part 2 - Back for Mains and fries again!

After our last visit to Three Little Pigs, we have decided to visit them again for their mains.

And this time we were brought to the back of the restaurant where we were greeted with their well known big metal piece display of pig which teaches you the different part of their meat.

Our first item came and it was Longan Longan, I would say this is a drink plus dessert. I enjoyed the rich longan sweetness and the thoroughly generous amount of boiled longan but it was too sweet for me, it would be better if they do not add any syrup as longan sweetness would suffice.

Signature dish pork chop with rice came with pearl rice, Japanese leek and the combination of sunny side up egg with the aromatic sliced of hand pounded before grilled pork chop. You will be surprised that Pork Chop was done by so well that its marinate permeates and so tender, such that they are tasty enough to be eaten without any other additional sauce. The taste was normal yet somehow new to us sauce was ingenious. It didn’t exactly blow us away, but it was worth a try.

Next was chicken chop and why chicken in a Pig themed restaurant?! Well, as the menu stated recommended, so I ordered it. It came with baked bean, pinkish coleslaw with crinkle cut fries and chicken chop with mushroom sauce.

All the side dish were very normal, the baked bean was mashy which not to my liking. Coleslaw and fries were very appetizing. But for the chicken chop, the chicken was tender, yes, but I could taste the chicken was frozen before presented to us, and it's a strong one, which made the whole dish not as appealing as a recommended mains.

And we ordered this Cheesy Pork fries again as it is one of the must have at Three Little Pigs! Served in aluminum round tin with grease paper, shoestring fries topped with pork slices with sour cream, cheese sauce, and spring onions. I really liked how the sliced meat was super tender it was somehow very similar to the Pork Chop we had a moment ago.

The pork chop for all the dishes were consistent. They were tender and juicy, and comes with a slight salty crunch on the outside. The atmosphere was nice and nice place to chill with your friends or family for a night out. This will be a recommendation to my friend who love pork chops!

Korean dessert Bingsu has hit the town! It’s shaved ice dessert that many called it the Korean ice kachang, the difference between ice kachang and Bingsu is bingsu has its ice shaved so finely that we were not exaggerating when we say it really melts in your mouth. Most of the Singaporeans were spotted having Bingsu at a stylish cafe, or in a restaurant. Now you can satisfy your Bingsu cravings in Kopitiam!

When we were having dinner in Kopitiam, I saw something surprising, Bingsu and I thought to myself it must be like ice kachang just that they will arrange the item like Korean Bingsu at $5.90. To cure my curiosity, I went to buy it.

The Bingsu at Gangnam Bingsu comes much more affordable than any other places, where could you get Bingsu priced at $5.90?!

$5.90 is the portion that is almost the size of a usual Bingsu and a large portion $7.90 that's filled to the fullest! It really tastes like any other Bingsu, milk ice was finely shaved and a flavor that's getting more with every scoop.

Right here this is the Oreo Banana Bingsu, covered with banana pieces, 1 and a half piece of Oreo, whipped cream, a scoop of milk ice cream and sprinkled with all the oreo biscuit bits covered the shaved ice.

This is the mango Bingsu, covered with Mango, cranberries, whipped cream and a scoop of milk ice cream, this is for the price of $7.90, the mango is not too sweet, mixed with the ice is not very overwhelming with the mango syrup sweetness.

Overall it has to be one of the most affordable Bingsu options out there that you don't have to sacrifice too much on quality for the sheer cheapness in terms of price.
