House of Roasted Duck 劉強烤鴨店 - Restaurant by Gao Ji Food.

House of Roasted duck 劉強烤鴨店 was actually a recommendation from one of the food lovers in the community and so, we decided to try it out today.
House of Roasted duck 劉強烤鴨店 is an umbrella business under Gao Ji Food 高記食品,which making Yong Tau Foo is their forte and their key business. Gao Ji has never disappoint us so far with their food and thus, we were very excited to try out House of Roasted Duck after the highly raved reviews.

We went to the Bugis village branch on a weekday evening. You will not miss out their brightly lited signboard when you walk past.

We were there at about 9pm and there were many seats available. Probably due to the late timing where everyone would have taken their dinner, the shop looked a little empty despite its small dining area. We have walked passed a few times on weekends and there were definitely long queues outside the shop. We were glad that we need not queue before we got our seats.

At House of Roasted Duck, You will get to choose the type of meat you want to go along your staple. As for how it is named, House of roasted duck is famous for their Peking Duck, and Roasted Duck. They have Soy Sauce Chicken and Crispy Roasted Pork and as well! They have named the famous 4 meat items as “Heavenly King” and it is highly recommended by the shop for their customers to try. You may choose to create your own combo with rice or noodles, or congee based on your own liking.

It was a rainy evening and we decided to order a bowl of shrimp wanton soup (净鲜虾云吞) together with our mains (which we will be covering shortly). Priced at $7.80, the bowl of soup came with 6 shrimp wantons.

Each wanton is filled fully with prawns and minced pork that has been lightly seasoned, wrapped under the thin and clear wanton skin. The slight cloudy wanton soup was just nice to our tastebud, but it would be better if it can be served hot (instead of lukewarm).

There were not 1, but 2 prawns in each wanton dumpling!

Being a Char Siew fan, we can’t resist the temptation to order Char Siew rice, especially in an authentic Hong Kong restaurant.

The char Siew has a good combination of 80% lean meat with 20% fats, which was something to our liking. The sauce on rice was also light yet flavourful enough to not overpower the fragrance of white rice.  The white rice used in the stall was also of a higher quality, solid yet soft with each grain not sticking to one another.

Next came was the combination of Crispy Roasted Duck with soy sauce chicken on white rice. Each piece of the roasted duck is sliced in a way that it has more meat with tiny bone, which makes it easier to eat. The skin was roasted to a slight crisp and was extremely flavourful! Unlike many of the stalls in the market, the texture of the roasted duck meat here does not have a rough texture, and to be honest, it was beyond our expectation and the roasted duck skin totally won our hearts down. The tender soy sauce chicken was good too, easily making it one of the favourites for dinner. The chicken was also packed with flavours and the meat was also soft and juicy, giving every bite a pleasure to our mouth.
We heard that the roasted duck here was sold out on a daily basis, even before their closing hours. Any roasted duck lover should definitely give this restaurant a try. We will definitely return soon to try out their Peking duck!

Wanton Noodle House (云吞面之家) - Best Wanton Mee in the East?

  • Operating Hours: 8.30 AM to 9.30 PM
  • Operating Days: Daily
  • Address: 312 Bedok Road, Singapore 469475
  • Food I had: Char siew Wanton Noodles, Chicken Feet, Ngoh Hiang
  • Total Cost: $49 for 6 pax

With a long running history dated back in the 1980s, Wanton Noodle House’s family recipe has been carried on through 3 generations. A simple signboard and exterior, you’ll easily spot its outstanding red banner when you’re there in the evening.

Right now their promotion was whenever you purchased a bowl of their noodles, it comes with one complimentary drink of barley, water chestnut or lime juice total at $5.

It was nothing special about. To be honest, the noodle was average at best, they could have had more flavors and more Q noodle to stand out from the other wanton mee dishes anywhere else.

The chicken feet was braised but my taste bud says otherwise, it was not even braised fully at all, the chicken feet are tender yes but could taste they did not braise for long.

The Ngoh Hiang was crispy outside but the meat on the inside is not tender which will spread out once you bite it.

The general flavors of the food are not too bad, though nothing outstanding, it is a restaurant complete with air-conditioning.

However, for the price we paid ($49 in total for 6 pax), we would have enjoyed it better if the portion of everything were given more. To each their own, so drop by to try it out for yourself.

Liang Xian Wanton Noodle (良賢雲吞面) - Rival to a famous stall in a ulu corner

I stumbled upon this little wanton mee stall inside a typical coffee shop in Malaysia alongside a road where famous Ah Piaw wanton mee (亞標云吞麵) resided. If you are not sure how to get here, once you've reached Ah Piaw wanton mee, look for the nearest 7-11 store, and the wanton mee stall is just 2 shops away from the 7-11.

One of the cons of having wanton mee here is the waiting time, we were there at 11 PM and we had to wait for more than 20 mins before the food was delivered to our table! If you are really hungry like us and would like to have this, be sure to eat something small before you go.

First, let's taste the noodle - it's not the usual wanton noodle seller would use. The stall owner used something in between wanton thin noodle and yi mee(意面) for their noodle; it is not as thin as the wanton thin noodle and yet not as thick as yi mee. Personally, I felt that the texture of the noodle was a lot better than Ah Piaw, as Ah Piaw serves its noodle slightly more salty to my tasting. The Char Siew was very normal to me as they used lean meat, but the char siew has a little more fats than the one I had at Tanglin Halt, which was also previously featured.

The wanton was good. Little knobs of tender minced pork are wrapped in a soft and smooth little handkerchief covered in cloudy soup. One bite into the wanton releases a natural sweetness from the meat, which it is covered with a trace of sesame oil.
All in all, it was a nice simple wanton mee stall serving tender egg noodles, with good wanton in a bowl of tasty broth. Thumbs up!👍🏻

Guangzhou Mian Shi Wanton mee (廣州麵食) - Best Wanton mee in Singapore I've had for supper!

If you ask me to recommend a good wanton noodle dish in Singapore for supper, my reply to you would Guang Zhou Mian Shi Wanton Noodle. Located on the old estate of Tanglin Halt, this outstanding stall operates from early evening all the way till late midnight, making it as one of the popular supper places for anyone.

This $3.50 portion has a generous amount of char siew, together with green chilli and sambal chilli, and not forgetting a (small) bowl of wanton soup. I have chosen the dry wanton noodle, and I feel that it is not too dry as it contained some gravy at the base to make it moist. Unlike other wanton noodles, the noodle contained a balanced moisture that is not too flavourful from the sauce, yet it is not too dry! I can totally feel each springy noodle strand, making me nod my head with every bite I take. It is also worth mentioning that the noodle is tasty as a whole, as it has completely absorbed the flavour from the sambal chilli and the gravy!

The Char Siew meat is a little dry and not as sweet in taste. The stall owner uses lean meat for the char siew, which tasted like the old school type of Char Siew. As compared to other wanton mee stalls I have come across, I was quite disappointed by the taste and I certainly feel that the Char Siew meat can be further improved as it was a bit bland, and it was such a waste for a nice dish like this.

Each plate of the wanton mee came with a bowl of wanton soup, which I feel it has made up for the disappointment of the Char Siew meat. There were 5 pieces of wanton dumplings given in a small bowl of soup! The wanton dumplings were simply outstanding as you can taste the freshness of the pork and crunchiness of the chestnut inside, building on a good sweetness taste from the soup. We can taste ginger in the soup, a taste similar to drinking fish soup. The skin used to make wanton is not thick at all as well.

It is definitely one of my favourite wanton noodle stalls in Singapore, and I totally have to comment on its outstanding noodle texture & the wanton dumplings! t is definitely worth the price to even go for the larger portion for the generous amount of ingredients that stall owner gives. It would be better if the stall owner can work on the texture and taste of the charsiew meat, which I think it will definitely be a plus point for this stall.
