Want to have a budget Mala hot pot meal without going out? Now you can and you eat it while it was boiling still!
A warning for those who do not take spicy. This is really spicy, it will make you sweat profusely.
I came across this when I walked pass a shop in KSL mall, they have lots of variety for sale, with beef, with duck meat, vegetarian, halal and so on, you can go have a look at them. Decided to get one and try out of curiosity, and it surprisingly packs quite a load inside. They were selling it for $19.90RM each.
On the back of the cover is the instructions, it is all in Chinese so I will explain the steps to enjoy this hot pot.
When you open up the box, it consists of these items from left to right, top to bottom;
- Fork
- Shorter box to put all ingredients
- Base box to put heating pack
- Mala oil base paste
- Heat pack
- Cover
- Vegetable pack (Sliced Lotus, Sliced potato, 黑木耳 fungi, bamboo shoot)
- Beef Sausage
- Quail Egg (Real egg!)
- Sesame Oil
- 川粉
All the food are preserved, not your typical ingredient you get at the restaurants. How do we make it hot or even boil it? I recommend you to cut open all up first (EXCEPT THE HEAT PACK, which tear the plastic wrapper will do) then follow the instructions as below
1) First, we take the red Mala Oil base paste pack and put on the shorter white box
2) Fill the box with either warm or cold water 1/3 full
3) Next put in the Vegetable pack, beef sausage, quail egg, and 川粉 together with the paste and water
4) Put the heat pack into red base box
5) So once you are ready, pour cold water or tap water into the base box till it totally fills up the heat pack and covers with the short white box filled with ingredients, cover it up and let the magic happen.
Once you cover it up, wait for about 10 seconds and you can hear it boiling and soon smokes come out from the hole of the cover. It's very amazing why the heat pack could boil water in such an instant. Please try not to touch it as it's hot, let's wait for 15 mins and make sure it is not boiling anymore before lifting the cover.
Lift the cover, pour the sesame oil all over it and stir everything up.
Here is what you see, all cooked.
Tastewise honestly all I could taste were Mala chili, I could not taste any potato, sausage, egg...nothing! It was all Mala taste.
Will I get it again, it was a novelty to me to be able to cook something up with just cold water, but I would not get it again, it's much better to get from restaurants at a higher price, at least you are not eating preserved stuff.
